Learner Outcomes:
- Students will be able to identify at least three evidence-informed strategies for successfully navigatingLevel II fieldwork and capstone experiences, including time management, communication withsupervisors, and self-directed learning.
- Students will be able to develop a preliminary action plan outlining specific goals, expectations, andresources to support successful completion of Level II fieldwork and capstone requirements.
Abstract:
This presentation, led by academic fieldwork and capstone coordinators, equips occupational therapy assistant and occupational therapy students with practical strategies for successfully navigating Level I fieldwork and capstone experiences. Emphasizing the transition from classroom to practice, the session introduces evidence-informed approaches to time management, professional communication, and self-directed learning that support performance across diverse clinical and community settings. Presenters will highlight common challenges encountered during fieldwork and capstone placements and offer actionable techniques to enhance adaptability, resilience, and clinical reasoning.
Through guided discussion and structured reflection, students will identify at least three key strategies to optimize their learning and professional growth. The session will also support students in developing a preliminary, individualized action plan that outlines goals, expectations, and resources necessary for success. The session will provide students the opportunity to ask questions, clarify expectations, and receive tailored guidance from coordinators based on real-world scenarios.
Biography:
Eileen Wang, OTD, MA, OTR/L, CSRS, is an Associate Professor I and Academic Fieldwork Coordinator at Southern California University of Health Sciences’ OTD program, Phoenix campus. She is an occupational therapist with 18 years of experience in adult and older adult rehabilitation across multiple settings, specializing in neurorehabilitation. She is dedicated to mentoring students and fieldwork educators, advancing OT education, and fostering community partnerships.
Teresa Roddy, BS, COTA/L, is a seasoned clinician with 26 years of experience across the lifespan. Currently serving as Clinical Director for an OTA program, she combines academic leadership with entrepreneurship. As a small business owner, Teresa specializes in designing accessible travel experiences, ensuring the world remains open to everyone.
Dr. Heidi Carpenter, OTD, OTR/L, MLS, is an occupational therapist, educator, and nonprofit leader in Arizona. She integrates clinical, academic, and advocacy expertise to advance practice, leadership, and community engagement. Heidi is passionate about whole-person care across the lifespan and building inclusive systems that empower individuals, families, and professionals to thrive together.
Dr. Carrie Bose is an Assistant Professor and Pathway Coordinator of Occupational Therapy at Creighton University’s Phoenix campus. She brings nearly a decade of pediatric clinical experience, specializing in medically complex populations, feeding, and program development, with interests in interdisciplinary care, simulation pedagogy, education, and innovative practice.
