Abstract:

The increasing prevalence of mental and behavioral health conditions among children necessitates enhanced mental health services in public schools, many of which report inadequate access to mental health professionals. While occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) possess a diverse skill set uniquely suited to address these needs which are often underutilized and limited to focusing on physical disabilities within Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). This presentation will highlight ways in which OTPs can participate in mental health interventions within the school setting while collaborating with other school personnel. Additionally, this presentation will provide tangible strategies for OTPs to be successful in advocating for their place in the realm of mental health in school-based practice.
