Learner Outcomes

  1. Identify fine motor/visual motor skills necessary to facilitate AAC use
  2. Learn strategies to facilitate motor skills necessary for AAC use
  3. Identify who is an appropriate candidate for an AAC device
  4. Learn strategies to utilize when collaborating with speech language therapy for appropriate AAC implementation


Abstract

In this presentation OTs will learn how to identify who is a candidate for an AAC device, current myths surrounding AAC use. How to facilitate necessary motor skills for AAC use. Additionally, they will learn best practice for treating clients with speech therapists to incorporate AAC use into their treatment sessions and how to expand skill development related to AAC devices.

 

Biography

Erica Tardone - Erica Tardone is an OT and ATP with 7 years of experience working with children and adults with complex physical/multiple disabilities. She specializes in positioning, mounting and development of necessary motor skills for successful use of AAC devices and alternative access powered mobility. She is
currently a solutions consultant for Tobii Dynavox serving the west valley of Phoenix and Northern Arizona. In this role she continues to consult on appropriate AAC interventions for users of all ages.

Sasha Perry - Sasha is an Occupational therapist and certified ATP. She has 10 years experience in school-based OT. She specializes in assistive technology, focusing on alternative access for communication and play for the last 6 years. She holds a bachelors degree and master's degree from University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. She is also currently an AAC evaluator for NAU.

Danika Stampfel - With over 9 years of experience in speech - language pathology providing direct services to children, adolescents, and adults, Danika specializes in complex communicators or individuals who use augmentative alternative communication (AAC). She is currently the founder & CEO of cAACtus AAC Solutions and an AAC evaluator/trainer for Northern Arizona University's AAC Evaluation and Training Program. She currently serves as the ArSHA AAC Committee Chair.
